Italy gave us pasta, passion, and postcard-worthy memories โ€” and we're about to spill all the travel magic. Tracing our unforgettable journey from Rome's ancient wonders, to Florence's Renaissance charm, to the coastal beauty of Sorrento. We traveled by train, soaking in the sights, stories, and scenic countryside along the way. Let the memories roll.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Trip at a Glance โ€” Jump to a Day

Day 1

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Arrival in Rome

Welcome to Rome, The Eternal City. Founded in 753 BC and named after its legendary first king, Romulus, this city has witnessed millennia of triumphs, transformations, and timeless beauty.

We spent three nights at the stunning Piazza Margana Palace, a spacious 3,200 sq ft private apartment tucked into one of Rome's most charming corners. With 9 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a sauna, and a jacuzzi, there's room for everyone to unwind and recharge. Highly recommend! Walkable to just about anywhere.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Fun Fact: The Margana Palace sits in the heart of Rome's historic Jewish Quarter, just steps from ancient ruins, cozy trattorias, and hidden piazzas that whisper stories from centuries past.
Day 2

โœจ Vatican City โ€” Art, Faith & Awe

On day 2, we stepped into Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. We had a private tour guide, which is non-negotiable. She did an amazing job teaching us about the rich history and tradition of the Vatican.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ What We Saw:

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ What to Wear: No shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops โ€” Vatican dress code is strictly enforced.

Day 3

๐ŸŸ๏ธ Gladiators & Giuseppe

Today we walked in the footsteps of legends and ended with flour-dusted laughter. Another private tour guide โ€” highly recommend.

๐Ÿ•˜ Morning: Colosseum Tour

Step into the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheater ever built. Once echoing with the roar of 50,000 spectators, built between AD 70โ€“80, it remains a symbol of Roman engineering and spectacle.

What to Bring: Comfortable shoes and a water bottle โ€” very hot and dry, but there are refillable water stations throughout.

๐Ÿ• Afternoon: Pizza Making with Chef Giuseppe

Roll up your sleeves and dive into dough with a true Roman pizzaiolo. Giuseppe guided us through the art of crafting authentic Italian pizza โ€” from kneading to topping to that first glorious bite. One of our absolute favorites of the whole trip.

Day 4

๐Ÿš„ Rome to Florence โ€” Art, Arno & Arrival

Today we traded ancient ruins for Renaissance brilliance as we journeyed north to Florence, the birthplace of art, poetry, and bold ideas. We stayed 2 nights near the iconic Ponte Vecchio.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Fun Fact: The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence that survived WWII. Today it's lined with glittering jewelry shops.

๐Ÿ—ฟ Afternoon: Michelangelo's David

Step into the Accademia Gallery to meet The David โ€” Michelangelo's 17-foot marble masterpiece. Carved from a flawed block no one else wanted, David stands as a symbol of courage and Florence's defiant spirit.

๐ŸŽจ Family Prompt: "What do you think David was feeling in that moment before battle?"

Day 5

๐ŸŽ๏ธ Ferrari, Pagani & Pizza in Modena

Today we traded Renaissance art for Italian horsepower as we headed to Modena, the beating heart of Italy's Motor Valley. The boys were absolutely in heaven.

๐ŸŽจ Fun Fact: Pagani blends art and science, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's belief that the two must walk hand in hand.

Day 6

๐ŸŒŠ Arrival on the Amalfi Coast โ€” Sorrento

Today we traded Renaissance rooftops for sunlit cliffs and sea air. Hotel Bristol Sorrento was the NICEST HOTEL we've ever stayed in!!! Nestled into the hillside with panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.

๐Ÿ‹ Sorrento's Lemons: Protected by IGP designation, these lemons grow in mineral-rich volcanic soil from Vesuvius โ€” larger, sweeter, and more aromatic than anywhere else. Perfect for limoncello.
๐Ÿฆ Gelato Tip: Try Fresco Gelato or Antica Gelateria dell'Accademia โ€” both local favorites.

Day 7

๐Ÿšค Capri by Sea โ€” Grottos, Gelato & Golden Light

We set sail from Marina Piccola at 9:00 AM for a private boat tour to the legendary island of Capri, with snorkeling stops and storybook views along the way.

Day 8

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Pompeii's Past & Sorrento's Sweetest Scoop

Today we walked through a city frozen in time โ€” Pompeii, buried beneath volcanic ash in 79 AD and preserved like a time capsule of Roman life.

๐Ÿฆ Afternoon: Visit Raki Gelato on Via San Cesareo โ€” natural ingredients, seasonal fruit, award-winning flavors.
Day 9

๐ŸŒธ Positano โ€” A Postcard Goodbye

Today we rode the ferry across sapphire waters to Positano โ€” one of the most iconic towns on the Amalfi Coast. With its cascading pastel buildings, winding staircases, and pebbled beaches, Positano feels like a dream painted in Mediterranean hues.

โ›ด๏ธ Scenic Tip: Sit on the right side of the boat for sweeping views of the coastline.

Day 10

โœˆ๏ธ Homebound โ€” Hearts Full, Bags Packed

Today, we traded sea views for seatbelts as we began our journey home โ€” bringing with us souvenirs, stories, and a newfound closeness forged across cities and coastlines.

๐Ÿš„ Italy Train Travel Tips for Families

Italians love their trains. Once you get the rhythm down, it's pure magic.

1. Book in AdvanceUse Trenitalia or Italo to reserve high-speed tickets early for better prices.
2. Assigned SeatingFrecciarossa trains have assigned seats โ€” keeps your group together.
3. Validate Regional TicketsUnvalidated paper tickets can result in fines. Italian conductors don't mess around.
4. Pack LightStairs and narrow aisles are common. Each person carries a small bag with snacks and water.
5. Arrive 20โ€“30 Min EarlyWatch monitors for your train's "bin" (platform) โ€” often posted late and not in English.
6. Train Beats CarFor Romeโ€“Florenceโ€“Naples routes, trains win on time, comfort, and views every time.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Culture Tips for Americans in Italy

A little cultural awareness goes a long way.

๐Ÿ‘— Dress Like a LocalSmart casual rules. Pack a shawl for churches. Ditch athletic wear for casual outings.
๐Ÿ’ต TippingNot expected but appreciated. Check for "coperto" on your bill. For private tours, 5โ€“10% is thoughtful.
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Greetings"Buongiorno" in the morning, "Buonasera" after 5 PM. Always greet when entering a shop.
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Respect the PaceMeals are leisurely. Enjoy the slower rhythm โ€” don't rush the server. This is the Italian way.
Italy changed us โ€” not just through postcard-perfect views or world-famous monuments, but in the quiet moments that stitched themselves into our hearts: kids chasing pigeons through piazzas, gelato breaks on cobblestone corners, long dinners filled with laughter and stories.

Grazie, Italia. You'll always be part of our story. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
