With seven kids, one of the many fun things is planning a personalized birthday for each of them. Five of those birthdays land within seven weeks, so we have to get creative. This year, our daughter wanted a glow party, so we threw it at home. Under blacklight, anything neon glows, so most of the work came down to lighting and a handful of UV-reactive decorations. Here's everything we used, with links.

The Lighting

Two things set the whole look: LED blacklight bars to make the neon glow, and sound-activated disco ball lights to throw color across the ceiling. The blacklight bars come as a two-pack with plugs and on/off switches, so there's nothing to wire.

The Cake: Walmart Cakes, Stacked and Decorated at Home

I bought the cakes at Walmart, stacked them myself, and decorated them with a UV-reactive neon cake topper set: neon cake balls, stars, and a Happy Birthday topper. Under the blacklight, the toppers glow.

DIY glow cake

  • Start with store-bought. Ours were two Walmart cakes, stacked at home.
  • Cover it in UV toppers. The cake balls and stars do all the glowing.
  • Take the cake photos under the blacklight. That's when the toppers glow.

The Decor

The backdrop behind the dining table is a neon graffiti Happy Birthday banner, 71 by 43 inches. Over the table, we hung UV dot paper garland (120 feet of it) from the light fixture.

For balloons we used neon glow balloons and a neon balloon arch kit.

On the table: a neon glow tableware set with plates, napkins, cups and colorful cutlery for 24 guests.

Favors and Face Paint

We set favors out on the kitchen island. The glow party favor pack comes with LED glasses, finger lights, light-up hair clips and 100 glow stick bracelets. We also had neon UV face paint, which is water-based and washable.

A Game and a Photo Wall

We set up a light-up cup pong set on the floor. The cups light up in different colors. For photos, we hung a neon green tinsel curtain in a doorway.
